Getting the most out of your training

The attached document was based on a review of medical training by a professor of education. He was asked tor review the low pass rate in postgraduate exams in the late 1990s. He reviewed the learning styles of doctors who passed postgraduate exams and those who didn’t. He noted that success was significantly helped by ensuring that learning happened in the workplace as well as during private study. This is not surprising as there are many more hours available during the working week than are available to most doctors for private study. Learning in the context of social interaction and patient care may also be more likely to be recalled. In addition to this explaining things that you have learnt to others often reveals gaps in your knowledge that you hadn’t appreciated. He wrote a couple of short paperbacks that should be in the hospital library to give advice about his work, this advice is summarised in the PDF shown below:
